What is direct response copywriting?
Direct response copywriting is copy that asks the reader to do something now and makes it possible to count how many did. The term comes from mail-order advertising, where every ad carried a coupon or a phone number and the response could be tallied against the cost of the placement.
That accountability is the whole idea. Direct response doesn’t try to build a feeling over months. It makes an offer, handles the objections, and asks for the order.
Direct response today
The coupon became a click. Landing pages, paid social, and sales email are all direct response, and the discipline hasn’t changed: a clear offer, a specific audience, a single action, and a number that tells you whether it worked. Conversion copywriting is the term most people use now for the same thing.
Example
The Baylor Scott & White Health ads are direct response in a regulated category: paid social built to drive screening appointments, measured by bookings.
